FAQ
Caribou’s cases are made from structural polypropylene, a polymer material that provides far superior durability compared to ABS plastic (which typically cracks under impact) and Aluminium which bends and permanently deforms. Our cases are designed to survive the crash by absorbing the impact and retaining their original shape. When an aluminium case is subject to a crash the shape will metal will be deformed and prevent the case from latching and sealing. If you do manage to destroy your Caribou case, we will replace your case for free. There is no correct or incorrect answer to this question, only preferences. Our opinion is that for riding where most of the time is spent on asphalt roads, then hard luggage makes the most sense. Hard cases are far more secure against theft and will survive accidents far better than soft bags. For true offroad riding, where most of the time is spent on rough trails, then soft luggage is probably more appropriate. In such applications, weight is of greater importance than durability or security. Soft luggage is also more suitable for riders of smaller capacity motorcycles. We use both types of luggage depending upon the ride.

In the event of an accident, the advantage of a hard case versus a soft bag is durability. Hard cases have been developed over decades of use to withstand extreme environments. The polypropylene structural polymer case material allows the case to flex without cracking or deforming when subject to impact. Aluminium cases bend and can rarely be straightened. Soft bags are known to tear. It is not coincidental that Peli cases are the preferred choice of military organizations across the globe.
We have designed our luggage to work with Hepco Becker, SW Motech and Givi racks. In our opinion, German Hepco Becker offer the most durable mounting solution. SW Motech and Givi are the best value options and are slightly lighter weight.
We recommend that no more than 9kg be carried in each side case and 7kg in the top case. It is important to carefully pack the cases so that the weight is equally distributed between both sides of the motorcycle. Maximum speed of 130 Km/hr must not be exceeded.
Side opening cases are fitted with gear retention straps as standard. We offer optional gear bags and liners to keep items secure when the case is opened. The deep interior also prevents spillage.
The side cases do not accommodate helmets but the 34L Top Case will hold a full size helmet.

In the event of an accident, the benefit of the Caribou system is that they can be repaired, often in the field with simple tools. Latches and locks can be replaced. The cases can be plastic welded or replaced. Case systems from the competition typically require the replacement of the complete case at considerable expense. Peli cases are available throughout the world.
